Drop-through Longboards are the most versatile deck shapes, catering to nearly all riding styles.
Drop- through Longboards excel at freeriding slides and drifts, moderate downhill riding, cruising and commuting long distances.
They also carve well, and those decks with kicks can execute sharp turns and some Freestyle tricks.
Drop-Through longboards are an excellent choice for the intermediate rider who has mastered carving and cruising on a Pintail Longboard and wants to progress into freeriding or covering distances.
A drop-through won’t be the best choice for intermediate riders who want to develop their skills in freestyle or dancing. So take a look at Dancing or Freestyle Longboards instead.
Drop Through Longboard Features
Drop Through Longboards have two distinctive features.
- Drop-Through Mounted Trucks
- Cut-Outs
Drop-Through Mounted Trucks
Instead of ‘ to ‘ the deck, the trucks are mounted ‘through’ the deck. This is achieved by square holes cut into the deck so the trucks can sit through.
The Drop-Through trucks bring the deck lower to the ground making them more stable and more accessible to push than their top-mounted counterparts.
The disadvantage is as they are lower to the ground, they cannot execute sharp turns.
Cut Outs
The nose and tail have ‘cut outs’, which ensures there’s no wheel bite no matter how hard you lean on the deck.
However, as the wheels are exposed, the rider can catch their feet on a wheel if they’re not careful.
Wide & Concave
Drop Through decks are wider than pintails and more uniform. Most are symmetrical or close to symmetrical, providing ample foot space throughout.
Drop Through Longboards usually have more aggressive concave than pintails providing grip for the feet and toes essential for sliding and riding faster.
Length
Drop-Through longboards are shorter and stiffer than Pintails ranging from 36″-42″ although between 38″-40″ is the standard.
Flex
Flexes are generally medium to stiff as the lower centre of gravity requires more responsiveness to execute moves such as carves and slides.
Trucks
180mm 50 degrees reverse kingpin trucks feature on most Drop-Through Longboards as they provide quick responsive turning with more turn for less lean when compared to top-mounted trucks.
The 180mm RKP trucks also remain stable even at higher speeds.
Wheels
70mm wheels are fitted to most Drop Through Longboards. They accelerate fast, maintain impressive top speeds and slide smoothly.
Decks with smaller wheels such as 63mm are available, which accelerate quickly.
Wheels hardnesses range from 78A-83A.
78A’s are softer and grippier, more predictable when sliding and stable at high speeds, an excellent all-round wheel for Drop Through Longboards
83A are harder. They’ll slide more but are trickier to control, so more skating skills may be required.
The hardness of the surface skated on will determine the overall grippiness of the wheel.
As skaters gain experience, they form their preferences for wheels and skating style.
