Want to surf the streets in a relaxed, smooth manner? if so, you need Pintail Longboard
Pintail Longboards look like a small surfboard on wheels with decks ranging from 33″-60″, although 38″-44″ is the standard.
Pintails provide a ‘surf’ like feel. They are fitted with top mount trucks, making them higher than other longboards and large soft wheels that ride over humps and bumps effortlessly.
Pintails suit many beginner Longboarders who often just want to ‘cruise’ riding the streets and roads with minimal turns, getting from A-B with an enjoyable ride soaking in the fresh air and the atmosphere of the city streets beachfront or country roads.
Pintails are flexible and turn well thanks to the top-mounted trucks quickly. They are, however, not as stable as dropdown or drop-through Longboards.
Flexes vary depending on the materials used (maple, bamboo, fibreglass or plastic), amount of layers (which range from 6-10 ply), the length of the deck and the wheelbase (distance between truck mountings).
Longer decks and wheelbases make more flexible decks than lower ply decks or those incorporating a ply or two of bamboo.
Flexible decks are smoother to ride and less tiring on the joints, while stiffer decks are more responsive and easier to control.
Pintails are good to learn on. Beginners can quickly master the art of carving and cruising. However, Pintail Longboards are prone to ‘wheel bite’ where the rider leans into a turn too much, and the underside of the deck touches the wheel.
Wheelbite isn’t an issue on the dropdown and drop-through longboards, which have cut-outs to prevent wheel bite.
Practice will ensure you don’t lean too much into your Pintail Longboard. You generally don’t have to, as the top-mounted trucks provide enough leverage for tight turns.
Some Pintails include a kicktail which allows even sharper turning.
While Pintails are great for carving (travelling in an ‘S’ trajectory regulating your speed), Cruising and even daily Commuting are not the best choice for speed riding, freeride slides and drifts and freestyle tricks.
If you’re starting in Longboarding and want to learn the basics quickly or have experience and want a pleasant ride over medium to long distances, then a Pintail is for you.
If you’re more interested in riding at speed, downhill racing, freeriding, or performing freestyle tricks, then a Dropdown or Drop through Longboard will serve you better.
