Fishtail Longboards are excellent for beginners, cruising and urban commuting.
The Fishtail provides a smooth and bumps free ride that feels like surfing on the pavement thanks to the large deck and big soft wheels.
Fishtail Trucks are top-mounted, which allows the rider to lean into the board more, resulting in better responsivness when turning.
Fishtail Longboards are a variation of the classic Pintail Longboard with a few distinct differences.
Fishtail Vs Pintail Longboards
Fishtail Longboards are very similar to Pintail Longboards in the way they look and the way they ride.
Both are available in sizes ranging from 36″-44.”
Both are available in a range of flexes, from soft to stiff.
Both are based on the classic surfboard shape with top-mounted trucks and medium to large wheels.
Both can suffer from ‘wheel bite’ where the underside of the deck catches the top of the wheel when the rider leans.
So what’s the difference?
Let’s assume we have a Fishtail and a Pintail Longboard of the same length and the same flex.
The Fishtail has a shorter wheelbase (the distance between trucks) and a longer tail.
The Tail is shaped like a Fishtail (hence the name), whereas the Pintail ends in a point. The Fishtail has two points.
The Tail is wider and sits over the back trucks further. The Fishtail can be used as a kick to execute sharper turns, something not possible with the Pintail.
Some Fishtails can execute freestyle tricks. Although if you can see yourself performing tricks on a regular basis, the Fishtail is a poor choice, take a look at Trick Longboards instead.
Fishtails have more of a concave than Pintails. The concave provides more leverage when turning.
Fishtails tails are more responsive executing turns quicker and sharper.
Pintails are a smoother ride, easier on the joints and slightly more stable at speed.
Should I Buy A Pintail Or Fishtail?
There really isn’t much difference between the two, but
If you want to cruise in an area where there’s lots of traffic, people and obstacles requiring lots of stopping, starting and sharp turns, then a Fishtail is right for you.
If you want the smoothest possible cruise and the traffic, obstacles and people are minimal to medium and can be easily weaved around, then a Pintail Longboard will serve you better.
